Social tool Radar.net has added support for Flickr on all its mobile applications, including the iPhone. Radar users who are also Flickr users can plug-in their account credentials and get the latest photos from their contacts filtered into Radar's activity feed. At first glance, the iPhone version of Radar's app for photo viewing is not quite as good Flickr's mobile page, but it packs a punch. You can take a photo with your phone and send it to either Radar or to Flickr, and if you double tap on the image it gets rid of the rest of the UI and lets you zoom and rotate it within a virtual workspace. It's very fluid, although the scaling does not re-render the image, meaning large, detailed images suffer pixelization. Luckily, you can solve this by visiting the Flickr-hosted image using the built-in Web browser.

The Microsoft Outlook add-on that can populate an Outlook contact field in a click has a catchy name invoking all manner of iconic 'wabbit' images, and a concept applicable to the breadth of office employees. However, it's also got a finicky algorithm, at least in my case, too much manual labor involved to finish populating an incomplete contact record, and a $20 price tag for a version 1.0 app that may only work half the time.

In Gwabbit's defense, when the application behaved as promised, it did so well. When Gwabbit detects an e-mail in the reading pane or when an e-mail is fully opened, the application first searches for as much information as it can in the e-mail address and signature block. Gwabbit then checks if the sender is already an Outlook contact. If not, or if the contact details have changed, Gwabbit will notify you--within about five seconds--with a pop-up alert from the Gwabbit toolbar it installed. If you accept the contact's inclusion, you'll have the person's full details pasted into a record without ever having to retype phone numbers, their title, and so on.

ately for me, Gwabbit often got confused. It repeatedly attempted to record the all-clear tag that AVG Anti-Virus pastes to the bottom of incoming messages as my contacts' company addresses. It also tried creating an entry that paired my CNET signature with my coworker's e-mail address--more than once. Sadly, even when I went through the trouble of highlighting a clearly delineated signature block in Gwabbit's internal viewer (labeled "Improve Results,") the program failed to grab the signature.

Mozilla says next Firefox likely months away

Mozilla had planned to release its new "Shiretoko" version of Firefox in early 2009, but with the scale of changes made to the open-source browser, a date halfway through the year now looks more realistic.

After releasing Firefox 3.1 beta 3 last week, the organization behind the browser said a fourth beta is planned--and with the new version number 3.5.

"There are no plans for a Beta 5 at this time, and after Beta 4 we'll be looking to move to a release candidate," said Firefox director Mike Beltzner in a statement. "Of course, we stand by our commitment to ship software when it's ready."

So when might the final version of Firefox 3.5 be ready, with at least two more test versions planned? Mozilla evangelist Chris Blizzard offered a loose schedule in a Twitter post Friday. "Firefox 3.5 will be out once we do one more beta and some release candidates. No dates, but probably 2-3 months or so," Blizzard said.

It's always difficult to draw the line between freezing features to concentrate on stabilizing software and extending development time to add a bit more technology to the new version; Mozilla decided the latter path was the better one.

"The increase in version number is proposed due to the sheer volume of work, which makes Shiretoko feel like much more than a small, incremental improvement over Firefox 3: TraceMonkey, video tag and player support, improvements to user controls over data privacy, significant improvements in the web layout.
